National Recognition For Norwich-Based
UK Leader In Energy-Efficient Design

A Norwich-based energy and environmental specialist has won a national honour for his work in improving the energy performance of buildings.  Robert Bilbie, of Robert Bilbie Consultancy, has been awarded a Gold Award by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) – the highest honour given by the professional body, and one of only seven people in the UK to receive the medal this year.

Mr Bilbie’s award was given for promoting energy efficient building design.  He was the only person in the country to be recognised in this category, an award which has not been given for three years.  Mr Bilbie received his medal from CIAT President Jim Kirwan at the Institute’s AGM in Manchester’s Great Hall.

The citation for the award said:

“Robert has promoted the benefits of energy efficient design for a number of years by being continually proactive in this field of construction.  He has brought credit to our Institute in this respect, and his CV speaks for itself.

“Whilst promoting his own practice, he has found time to be involved in training others, serving on task forces, etc.  Throughout the construction industry, both in East Anglia and beyond, his views are sought and listened to, which brings continual credit to CIAT.”

Robert Bilbie Consultancy, based in Thorpe Road, Norwich, is one of the UK’s leading Energy and Environmental Consultants and Assessors, and works with local, regional and national architects, house builders, contractors, and housing associations to help maximise the energy efficiency of new buildings, as well as assessing designs against ‘EcoHomes’, ‘Code for Sustainable Homes’ and other environmental standards.  The practice has gained a national reputation in this increasingly relevant area of expertise.

Mr Bilbie said, “The award of the Gold Medal reflects the hard work and expertise of everyone in the team at RBC.  We are delighted that our commitment to helping make sure that Britain’s new buildings are energy efficient - with low CO2 emissions - and environmentally responsible has been recognised.  We are very proud that a Norwich practice has been shown to be leading the field in this growing area.”

The CIAT Gold award was first given in 1999, and is awarded to a maximum of ten people every year who have provided ‘outstanding services’.  The Institute is the professional body representing over 7500 professionals working and studying in the field of Architectural technology in the UK and overseas.  Chartered Architectural Technologists are specialists in the science of architecture, building design and construction, and form the link between concept and construction.
